Around 65 percent of the sample had sexual nocturnal dreams, some of which proceeded to orgasm; no correlation was found between adolescent age and incidence (pp. 196, 203).
Solitary-sexual activities are masturbation and nocturnal dreams. Social-sexual activities include heterosexual petting and coitus and homosexual relationships. Pre-marital petting is accepted by many females and males as a substitute for coitus. Petting is a behavior found among all age groups. Around 40 percent of the sample reported heterosexual petting by the age of fifteen years; nearly 100 percent reported some petting experience prior to marriage. Pre-marital sexual orgasm was reported by two-thirds of the married sample females; coitus was reported by only 17 percent. The authors point out an interesting statute law regarding pre-marital coitus which reflects the moral codes of the times: throughout the United States, coitus is prohibited for male and female juveniles, although the age an individual is no longer a juvenile is found to vary (pp. 228, 233, 282, 324).
Marital coitus is found to be a large part of the total sexual outlet for most females and males; socially, it is the most important of all sexual activities because of its importance in the creating and maintaining of the home. The incidence of marital coitus after marriage is nearly 100 percent. Active incidence for younger married females was reported at more than 99 percent; incidence dropped between ages thirty-one years and thirty-five years (98 percent) and again after age fifty-five (80 percent). Frequency began at around three times per week for teenaged married females; this dropped to 2.2 times per week by the age thirty, 1.5 times per week by forty years, 1.0 per week by fifty years, and 0.6 per week by sixty ye...
