Counseling and Development

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Counseling and Development in a Multicultural Society

Meeting basic economic needs (stage two) results in personal determinism with group membership. Satisfaction of economic needs and acquired wants (third stage) results in a shift from balance of spirit, mind, body, and environment toward individual power of mind and will over the environment with diminished group dependence. Stage five is the search for meaning, identity, and a family substitute, to overcome emptiness. A search for remedies (stage six) results in new balance of self, others, and the environment (pp. 9-10).

Research on work motivation can be used for career counseling. This material helps the counselor develop and clarify motivational needs and ways to fill them, understand why people behave as they do in organizations, develop an awareness of the dynamics of work motivation, develop an awareness of the potential of organizational support in meeting needs, and understand obstacles in organizations that prevent need fulfillment.
