These families were male dominant and child-centered. Frontier development resulted in transitions into the White civilization. Tribes of the Pacific Northwest and the Great Basin Area are found in the Cascade Mountains bisecting states of Washington and Oregon. This status-class society developed over thousands of years; material possessions determined wealth and social rank. Spanish Catholic missionaries brought conversion to Christianity. Tribes of the Eastern Woodlands were found along the eastern coast. Farming and hunting provided for the families. White settlers brought battles and tribes moved west. Tribes of the Plains are found in the Plains. Hunting and farming sustained the people. White civilization moved tribes westward to be adopted by other tribes (pp. 54-62).

The phases of Black history in the U.S. are characterized by White American attitudes toward Blacks, during nine periods. In the Slavery and Racial Oppression phase, Blackness was viewed as first evil and then animalistic, needing control. Next, slavery was necessary during the Revolutionary era and good for the development of the nation during the pre-Civil War era. Racial Oppression, the following phase, was a time when Blacks failed to achieve positive advancement, confirming their inferiority.
