Hamlet and Actors

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Hamlet is a difficult play to perform and especially so if the intent is to reach a modern audience that is not accustomed to some of the traditions of the theater involved in the play. It is a difficult part especially for the actor playing Hamlet because he has perhaps the longest part in Shakespeare, meaning the part with the most lines of dialogue. It is also difficult for that actor given the problems that the play presents involving this character, and critics of the play have long been concerned about the apparent indecision of this character. He is given a job to do early in the play, but he seems to avoid doing it for most of the play without a clear explanation as to why. Acting any play means first making the characters believable and understandable. Any production of a play is likely to have a somewhat different interpretation than any other, though certain overall themes will be depicted in any version of Hamlet. The director in any given production will impose certain interpretations, and the actors will bring their own experience and capability to the same task. Any comments on the acting in Hamlet of necessity will be general and would differ if any element in a production were changed.

He has to realize this as son as the ghost talks to him. No one else in the play knows what the ghost has told him, only that he has spoken to the ghost. The other characters are thus puzzled with Hamlet's behavior because they have no idea what has come over him or why. The actors have to play this uncertainty according to how it would affect them. Hamlet's friend Horatio is concerned for his friend. Claudius, the king, is suspicious of the motives of the younger man and also becomes convinced that Hamlet may be insane. Other characters also reject their own concerns and fears onto Hamlet and see his odd behavior in whatever terms fit their view most closely. Hamlet's hesitation can be seen as part of his plan for carrying out the task given to him, but whether he carries it out immediately or waits, the task itself is not of his creation. His own death is not deserved in that he has not challenged the gods and lost as is true for so many tragic heroes. Yet, this is not entirely true, for technically, Hamlet is a regicide by the end of the play, eve
