Catastrophic Illness

This is an excerpt from the paper...

According to E. Arthur Winkler, the mind has a very strong bearing on the physical state of the body. In his book, God Wants You Healthy, he describes the connection between words that people state and the physical problems that result from programming in the subconscious mind (11). He describes instances from his own counseling and hypnotherapy practice that dramatically illustrate the power of the mind to create perfect health, social poise, an attractive personality, and success in most areas of living.

Dr. Winkler does not specifically discuss the disease of AIDS, but it is possible to extrapolate from his ideas the connection between the disease and the attitudes that might bring it about. He does devote an entire chapter in his book to sexuality, and he says that "our society has developed many moral concepts about the expression of sex" (114). Many of these ideas have to do with what is appropriate and what is not between two people who desire to be together. Many traditional teachings say that sex is evil, nasty, and dirty, and these beliefs cause sexuality to become blocked, creating physical difficulties of all kinds.

It is possible that our society as a whole has judged and condemned normal sexuality to such an extent that the new disease of AIDS has been created to manifest the collective guilt and fear. There is also great fear about homosexuality, which has actually been with us for centuries, and perhaps the two negative ideas have

the condition of stroke, but other concepts relate in a way that would be helpful to a therapist working with stroke patients. Strokes have to do with the flow of blood in the brain and the brain functions working properly. Sudden traumas cause obstruction in the flow of blood and the result is loss of function in some area. Persons who have experienced such conditions could be helped with suggestions to counteract the loss of function and the repair of the obstruction of flow of blood to the brain. General health depends on the blood supply being rich with oxygen and flowing freely to every part of the body (98). Suggestions regarding this idea of flow and the blood doing what it is supposed to do would be helpful to the subject who has suffered stroke. One case study details the situation of a person who had been troubled with arthritis for years. She came to Dr. Winkler for help and through hypnosis discovered deep-seated feelings of resentment and hatred. It became clear to her that her own mind had crippled her (7). Hypnotic sessions devoted to calm, relaxation, and love eased her symptoms, and three months after her last session her body was completely healed. She was able to release her wheelchair and the improper
