The Quebec Act, the Ontario Act, and the Federal Privacy Act require that institutions only use current and accurate personal information, and the F.I.P.A. recommends that all reasonable steps be taken to ensure that personal information is up-to-date and complete. The F.I.P.A. also recommends that information banks, such as INFO SOURCE, the federal computer database, be made available in libraries, government offices and reading rooms, along with the name and telephone number of the official responsible for each personal information bank.

The right of access to one's own personal information is fundamental to any privacy arrangement. According to F.I.P.A., it is paramount that individual's have the right to learn what information is held by an institution and to determine its accuracy.
