concentrated within a few summer months, and the San must be constantly aware of underground and other deposits of water. The Kalahari supports little vegetation, thus the San are not able to keep large herds of animals to see them through periods of drought. Rather, the must limit the size of their livestock in order to maximize the natural resources available. The harsh nature of the environment insures that the San had to develop creative ways in which to maximize their resources.
The San, in fact, have become masters at the skillful exploitation of their environment. They are able to use almost every edible plant in the Kalahari and, by necessity, limit the amount of their meat consumption.
