d to own and run a small business by myself. In order to gain this information I used the school library and did a lot of introspective thinking about whether those personal characteristics match my own.

The day of the meeting which took place at a local fast food restaurant my goal and objective was to learn as much as I could from the gentlemen who was willing to spend his own time in order to help me. My basic techniques during the meeting were to be an attentive listener, answer his questions, and retain an open mind about the subjects we discussed. I felt a little nervous talking with this experienced, successful person whom I did not know until that day, but this information was important enough for me that I proceeded anyway.

I was greatly involved in this meeting, although sometimes in a passive way. I had initiated it, and the purpose was to answer my questions and concerns about going into business for myself. The meeting lasted about an hour and a half, and both the S.C.O.R.E. representative and I were clear on the nature of our individual contributions. I was supposed to have clear ideas about what I wanted to do, and he was supposed to help clear away the obstacles to my goals. I had indicated in writing the nature of my questions, and he and I had spoken on the phone before meeting at the restaurant.

What was most important and significant about this meeting is the scope of information that was at the fingertips of this skilled professional. He skillfully presented information in virtually every area of small business management that could have a bearing on the success or failure of any venture. At times I felt overwhelmed with the sheer volume of information and my perceived inept capability at that point, but I listened and observed.
