There are many reasons that young children are in poverty. Some of them have parents who do not have the education to get a good job. Some of them have single parents. Some of them have parents who abuse drugs and alcohol. A significant majority of children who are in poverty are nonwhite. In other words, race, education, and parent lifestyle can affect whether children are living in poverty. For many years, poverty was made out to be a character flaw of the poor. In other words, poverty was blamed on the poor. That has changed as economic systems have gotten more attention. But poverty is still a reality for many children, and the current policies do not always help make up for the problems caused by poverty. Poverty can be traced to one cause in some children, but it is more likely that there s some combination of causes for poverty. There are two things that need to be understood about poverty. The first thing is that the number of children who are living in poverty is actually growing. That can be seen from the fact that, now, more children who are in poverty do not get the right amount of health care than was the case in the 1990s. The second thing to understand about children in poverty is even more important. That is that the poverty has a life of its own, no matter what the source of the poverty is.
