reater capacity for inhibiting the outward manifestation of their anger.

What is even of greater interest for the purpose of this study is the correlation between sex differences in the brain and the cognitive performance of males and females. According to the reports of various researchers, men and women excel at different types of tasks because they utilize different parts of their brains. While women who use parts of both brain hemispheres tend to perform better than men in verbal and memory tasks, men who relied predominantly on the left brain hemisphere thrived on spatial tasks (Gur et al., 2002; Putz, Gaulin, Sporter, & McBurney, 2004; Spratt, 1999). To identify precisely how sex differences in the brain affect the cognitive performance of healthy young adults, Gur et al. (1999) examined the percentages of the gray matter and the white matter of the brain hemispheres in relation to the cranial volumes, as well as the performance of verbal and spatial tasks. Gur et al. (1999) found significant sex differences in the relative composition of the gray matter and white matter in relationship to the cranial volume. Even more significantly, the results indicated that a correlation existed between the sex differences in the gray matter in the left language hemisphere and cognitive functioning. Women who had a higher percentage of gray matter in the left language hemisphere outperformed the men on language tasks. Therefore, the understanding of sex differences in the structures of the brain could provide invaluable insight about the cognitive strengths and weaknesses of males and females.

Apart from identifying the correlation between the sex differences in brain structures and the cognitive performance of males and females, researchers have identified the underlying causes for the sex differences in the brain – "the exposure of t
