Health of Older Persons

th locus of control, selfesteem, OARS (a multidimensional functional health assessment) total functioning health rating, and health perceptions questionnaire total. Using the nutrition category of the health promotion lifestyle profile variable for illustration, the mean for the was 18.2 and the standard deviation was 4.1. A total possible score for the nutrition category was 40, thus, the 18.2 mean indicated that the average nutrition score for the research sample was less than onehalf the maximum possible score. A higher score indicated better practices with respect to food choices and meal patterns. The standard deviation of 4.1 meant that 68.3 percent of the 179 nutrition scores were in the 14.1to22.3 range, that 95.4 percent were in the 10.0to26.4 range, and that 99.7 percent were in the 5.9to30.5 range. The fact that the standard deviation was 22.7 percent of the mean score indicated the presence of a great deal of diversity in the nutrition scores. Comparable means and standard deviations were reported for each category of each of the nine variables.

Table 3 presented the summary results of canonical correlation analyses for a predictor variables set and for the OARS functional health ratings. Two canonical variates were presented for each variable in both the predictor set and the OARS set. Additionally, canonical correlation coefficients, and the degree of explained variance were provided for each of the two canonical variates, and the total variance explained by both sets of variates were provided. Canonical correlation is a multivariate technique which permits explanation of multiple dependent variables from multiple independent variables simultaneously. Thus, canonical variates one and two represent the relationships between single variables and either multiple independent variables and multiple dependent variables. The amount of correlation between corresponding pairs of canonical variates is the cano...
