to deal with both the latent and at times overt prejudice towards both Arabs and Muslims that is found in some segments of the American population and media (Wilson, 1991, pp. A29 30). Thus, sociological, psychological, and political pressures are experienced by the Middle Eastern student enrolled in American colleges and universities. These pressures, if not managed effectively, frequently lead to a variety of undesirable outcomes associated with mental and physical health, behavioral problems, and academic problems (Ogbudimkpa, 1991, pp. 137 138; Parr, 1992, pp. 20 25; Olivas, 1992, pp. 570 598; Clark, 1991, pp. 280 284). The sociological, psychological, and political issues confronting Middle Eastern students on American college and university campuses will be investigated in the proposed research study.
The purpose of the proposed research study will be two faceted. First, the proposed study will define the precise character of the sociological, psychological, and academic issues confronting Middle Eastern students enrolled in American colleges and universities. These definitions will be developed through assessments of the perceptions of both Middle Eastern students in the United States and college and university administrators. Second, the proposed research study will identify potentially effective responses to the issues confronting the Middle Eastern students. These potential solutions also will be developed through an assessment of the perceptions of both Middle Eastern students in the United States and college and university administrators.
The success of Middle Eastern students enrolled in American colleges and universities is important to both the students and the postsecondary educational institutions in which the students are enrolled (Parr, 1991, pp. 370 376; Griffiths, 1989, p. 1).
