Satir goes on to note that in healthy or well-functioning families, the opposite characteristics are exhibited. In other words, these are families where family members have strong levels of self-worth, engage in direct, clear, specific and honest communication, use flexible, human and appropriate rules, accommodate themselves to change, and view their link to society as open, hopeful and based on choice.

3) To ascertain whether you live in a nurturing family, there are three questions that require a "yes" answer. What are they?

(1) Does it feel good to live with your family right now? (Satir stated that in most dysfunctional families, it had not even occurred to family members to ask this question; they simply took living together for granted).

(2) Do you feel you are living with friends, people you like and trust, and who like and trust you? (Satir stated that most members of dysfunctional families thought that their family was somehow different from other people such as "friends" and never though to characterize them in this way).

(3) Is it fun and exciting to be a member of your family? (Most dysfunctional family members view their homes as a place of threat or burden or merely boring; they do not view home as an interesting or rewarding place).

4) Define and discuss the nurturing family.

Satir states that the nurturing family is one in which family members love and value one another in an open and unashamed way. Family members are people who are happy, alive, genuine and honest. They do not merely living "in their heads" but also in their hearts and spirits. The respect life.
