Charlotte's Web and Management
This is an excerpt from the paper...
E. B. White’s Charlotte’s Web represents the most successful selling children’s book of all time prior to the recent craze over J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter collection. The story centers around a runt of the litter pig named Wilbur, a young girl who loves him, Fern Zuckerman, and a courageous spider who saves him from the fate of other pigs on the farm, Charlotte. After being saved from premature death as a runt by Fern, Charlotte tries to save Wilbur from becoming breakfast sausage by mounting a public relations campaign to make Wilbur appear so special that few if any would want him dead. Charlotte saves Wilbur’s life by making others see he is more valuable in the world than dead. However, Charlotte sacrifices her own life to create her masterpiece – an egg sac containing 514 of her offspring. Wilbur repays Charlotte for her love, support and friendship by protecting her eggs until hatched. This helps spread new life and new potential. There are many passages and quotes from Charlotte’s Web that could apply to management theories pertaining to behavior. In Charlotte’s Web, Charlotte would never have the chance to intervene in Wilbur’s life if it would not have been for the personality of Fern Zuckerman, who calls the intention to kill Wilbur because he is born small one of the greatest injustices ever. One of the most interesting aspects of personality that can be observed without complex testing is the manager’s locus of control. A person’s locus of control often determines how much personal responsibility they take for their actions and their consequences. An internal locus of control is when a person feels a certain degree of control over the direction they are taking, whereas, a person with an external locus of control believes that they are often helpless in the face of external factors which they view themselves as having little control over. Fern definitely exhibits an internal locus of control. She does not care that her highest authority figure, her father, aims to kill Wilbur because he is a runt. She does
