ety of reasons. One criterion of choice was the prevalence of Asian-Americans in my community and school setting. I have often worked in groups with Asian-Americans and socialize with others. Another criterion was the fact that Asian culture is highly distinct from American culture in a way that say Euro-American culture is not. A third criterion is my belief that Asian-Americans are a highly valuable culture that can teach other cultures a great deal. Asian-Americans fit the definition provided above of a co-culture, as they are distinct in race and ethnicity compared to my own culture. The recognition that different co-cultures do things differently than other cultures is known as “cultural relativity” (Kearney et al. 2001, 7).
