Proverb Experiment

d passed out a pencil and survey to each employee. After the employees finished the surveys, which remained anonymous except for gender and age, they handed them in to the researcher as they left the meeting. The survey was designed with closed-ended question in order to determine attitudes among employees regarding whether it was “better” to give or receive. The format of questions was based on the Likert scale, with a sample of the questionnaire listed below:

I always feel better when I give a gift than when I receive one.

I always feel better when I receive a gift than when I give one.

Results: If the results obtained are to be consistent with the hypothesis, then more respondents to the survey would mark that they have a greater degree of agreement with the statement “I always feel better when I give a gift than receive one” than “I always feel better when I receive a gift than when I give one.” Further, since the proverb we are testing does not make allowances for gender, age or socio-economic background, we would expect to find results that are consistent across these dimensions. In other words, men, women, teens and thirty-somethings, Jewish and Catholic, and employees on different levels of income should consistently support a high level of agreement with “I always feel better when I give a gift than when I receive one.” For example, if the proverb is true then it remains true for all individuals since it does not specify any particular individual for which it is true. Therefore, we would not expect to find those with higher incomes among the employees to be more in agreement with this question than those of lower incomes, nor would we expect it to be more true for women or teenagers than it is for men or thirty-somethings.
