Bargaining strategies can be genuine or tactical. Regardless of the strategies and tactics adopted, bargaining and negotiating is one of the most complex aspects of successful interaction on the personal and group level.

Depending on the issue, the Dual Concern Model of negotiation has gained a significant place in modern practice. The Dual Concern Model of negotiation includes the self and the “other”. It is a model that mirrors the psychological process of developing a healthy identity in that it focuses on internal realities (self) and external realities (other) and attempts to achieve a holistic and integrated outcome much like the Id and Superego hopefully develop into a holistic and integrated identity (Ego). The Dual Concern Model takes into account the individual’s concern about their own aims, agenda and objectives as well as entertaining the aims, agenda and objectives of the “other”. There are different dimensions considered in this model of the self and of the other, as outlined below:

Also to be considered within the bargaining and negotiating process is Game Theory. The Game Theory model considers many structural conflicts, like cooperative and noncooperative. The game part of the model refers to interactions where the outcomes are interdependent. Game Theory is the study of “1) The problem of exchange, 2) Decisions in conflict situations, 3) how players make decisions that affect each other, 4) the interaction of rational decision-makers, or 5) multiperson decision problems”.
