Turner Broadcasting System’s revenues have grown over the past two decades, but profits have been sporadic for the maverick-run company. One dramatic drop in net income occurred in 1984-1985, when there was a 90% decline in net income for the company (Thompson and Strickland 285). This was in large part due to the cash needed and the financing for Turner to purchase MGM/UA. The independent television station, named Superstation WTBS-TV, remained Turner’s main source of revenue and profit, since it was available anywhere in the continental United States. In a sense, Turner put cable television “on the map”, thanks mainly to his aggressive promotion of WTBS.
