Writing Tips

The research, much like the topic, can be provided for you or can be completely left up to you. Many professors will assign you specific research, either the textbook(s) from class or specific articles or essays. Also much like the topic, in order to get an “A” grade, you must incorporate ALL RESEARCH specified into your paper. As an example, say the professor provides the following list of research:

Organizational Behavior (Class textbook)

Use 3-5 journal articles dealing with your topic

A maximum of 1 electronic Web source

No research more than three years old

In examining the research specified above, in order to get an “A” grade, you must make certain you fully incorporate what is asked for and avoid incorporating anything that is not asked for. For instance, you must include concepts and/or quotations to support your contention(s) from your class textbook. Also, you must use 3-5 journal articles. Even though it is obvious this means not 1, 2, or 7 articles, you would be surprised how often writers do not comply with this instruction. So, too, these articles MUST BE from journals, not newspapers, magazines, or pseudo-journals like Psychology Today and the like. If you enjoy doing Web research, in this particular case the research instructions limit you to only one electronic source. Failure to follow these kinds of specific research instructions will result in a lower grade.

When no research is specified, you are free to use whatever sources you so choose. This can include a variety of sources. REMEMBER, you are trying to enjoy this and have fun while doing a good job. Therefore, when you are allowed to choose your own research remember that interviews with friends who have knowledge on a particular field (nurses, pilots, teachers, etc.) are valid resources.
