Reading and outlining are often time consuming and frustrating for most student writers. Often students are faced with thick stacks of texts to read and understand in order to write a paper. What is often forgotten in the process is that reading and outlining are nothing more than additional “preparation” before you can begin the writing process in a manner that will make writing much easier and of better quality.

For demonstration’s sake take the following assignment as an example:

Topic: Discuss the effects on the fetus in pregnant women who drink alcohol.

Sources: Minimum 4 Sources published recently (2 MUST BE journals)

The above topic includes information that is very important to beginning your “prep” work:

Your topic focuses on the impact on alcohol on fetal development.

You are asked to incorporate 2 journal articles into your research. This means you need professional journal articles from organizations like the American Medical Association, the British Journal of Medicine, and other professional journals. You also need to include two other sources MINIMUM. These are not specified as to source, so you may feel free to use Internet sites, pamphlets, magazines, newspapers, and other forms of research.

You are asked to ensure the length of your finished paper is a MINIMUM of 900 words. This is important for several reasons. It is important because it tells you your paper must be at least four or five pages to meet this requirement (as most 12-point type averages approximately 225-250 words per page). While you will not risk your grade by including more pages and articles than required in this assignment, failure to meet the MINIMUM requirements will more than likely prevent you from receiving an “A”.
