n sector (Beresford, Gardner, Pettit, Naniopoulos, and Wooldridge, 2004). Most sea ports, especially medium-traffic volume operations, are under pressure to improve operational productivity if they are to remain viable in the future. This study investigated the potential effectiveness of the implementation of an advanced port management system based on innovations in information technology (IT) as a strategic application that will enhance the probability that medium-traffic volume sea ports will remain viable in the future.
Medium-traffic volume sea ports in all parts of the world are confronting similar pressures to improve productivity (Zhu, Lean, and Ying, 2002). The research conduced for this study, however, investigated the situation of medium-traffic volume ports located on the West Coast of the United States to develop findings that are relevant to all medium-volume sea ports regardless of geographic location.
