Batch Processing and Manufacturing

This is an excerpt from the paper...

An advantage of starting with islands of machines engaged in batch processing and then integrating the production process later is that production managers can identify the elements of the production process that will benefit most from an integrated production process. Another advantage of this approach is that production managers can identify the most effective integrated design for a production process.

A disadvantage of starting with islands of machines engaged in batch processing and then integrating the production process later is that the potential for wasted time will be increased when the several automated production processes at the islands are not coordinated to assure the most productive scheduling of assets (machines and manpower). Another disadvantage is that the scheduling of raw material deliveries will be less effective than otherwise would be the case.

Products that are appropriate for mass production and products designed for mass customization are most suitable for integrated production processes. Such products are most susceptible to computer-controlled production.

Products that are most suitable for batch production are those that are labor intensive. Products that require the specific performance of hand labor or the human inspection of almost every item produced can disrupt the flow of an integrated production system.

rt provides both graphical and textual data relevant to the characteristics and structures of materials and components involved in the manufacture of a product. A home office executive could use a fabrication chart to learn more about the products manufactured at a distant operational site. Operations Process Chart. An operations process chart traces the movement of every component through a specific process. This type of chart allows production managers to assess the efficiency of resource use. A home office executive could use an operations process chart to identify problem areas in to operations of a distant facility. PERT Chart. PERT refers to program evaluation and review technique. In its original form PERT emphasized time, and provided a means of calculating the most probable time for completion of a project. In its current manifestation, PERT provides probability estimates of the time required for completion of specific activities within a series of activities. The probability determinations employ three time estimates ù the most optimistic time, the most probable time, and the most pessimistic time. The most optimistic time assumes that everything will work out as planned, while the most pessimistic time assumes t
