Types of therapy performed by the police social worker include brief therapy. The goal of this type of therapy is to promote immediate increased functioning; it is a practical approach based on current problem-solving and coping, rather than a long-term approach designed to explore childhood influences. During brief therapy the therapist provides supportive intervention while helping the client become aware of present and future goals, sources of support, and skills and strengths ("Decisive Resolution of Trauma," 2002).
