wn and for many, soccer reflects many sides of American society. To this generation, baseball players do very little most of the time. Football is slowed down by huddles, 2-minute warnings, and time-outs. Soccer however, is constantly moving and because of this, the spectators move with it and become less bored watching the game.

Football is also becoming looked upon as an extremely "on-field" violent sport as witnessed by the very recent well publicized injury of New York Jets defensive lineman Dennis Byrd. Dennis Byrd might not have sustained the potentially permanent and career devastating injury had the National Football League legislated more aggressively against players who use their helmets to "spear" opposing players (Oates C1). This type of "on-field" violence is not characteristic of soccer.

Dick Berg's ideas on game promotion set the stage for selling the sport to the American public. Berg had been the director of promotions for the San Francisco 49'ers before getting involved in soccer.
