Assessing religious/spiritual functioning

This is an excerpt from the paper...

"Assessing religious/spiritual functioning: A neglected domain in clinical practice" by Hathaway, Scott, and Garver (2004). This study sought to determine if religious or spiritual functioning is addressed in clinical practice to an adequate degree. Two quasi-experimental studies using survey research were conducted. The first surveyed 25 clinicians at four clinics to provide a preliminary investigation related to the following questions: "do clinicians in these settings routinely address their client's religious and spiritual functioning; do they consider such functioning in endogenous perspective by evaluating the extent to which disorders adversely impact client religiousness; and have clinicians in such settings utilized the religious and spiritual problem V-code to identify a clinical focus of attention on aspects of their client's religious or spiritual functioning" (p. 99).

The statistics for this first study included the use of frequency distributions and percentages to describe the data. Findings were presented in a table. Personality and demographic factors indicated for 13% of the variance on general intelligence. Regressing personality and demographic factors on specific abilities showed that they accounted for 9-17% of the variance in intelligence scores. Thus, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and age were negative predictors of intelligence and sex was a predictor with males having an advantage. Findings implied the importance of studying personality and intelligence together since they are clearly linked. "The impact of wife abuse on marital relations as revealed by the second Palestinian national survey on violence against women" by Hau-Yahia (2002). This study used survey research, a cross-sectional quasi-experimental design, to determine the impact of wife abuse on marital relations. A systematic random sample of 1,334 women were surveyed in the Second Palestinian National Survey on Violence Against Women. Extensive procedures were described regarding the selection of the sample; for example research assistances shoes one home at random on each side of every street selected and entered every 10th home on the lis
