Learning From Experience

Children were killed, supplies were cut off, even the air was not safe to breathe because our attackers used chemical, as well as traditional military warfare. Families were torn apart and our oil fields were set on fire, causing the entire infrastructure of my country to be shut down within a matter of days. This was significant because I was also not prepared for the serious mental and emotional damage which my friends and family experienced. Everyone suffered, the very rich private citizens, our royal family, and our most successful businesses and all whom they employed. I was personally effected because I had to wait a year before being able to attend college. However, that year was the most significant year of my life because I learned so much.

After the war started, instead of continuing my education, I began working on short-term projects which were designed to help get my country back up and running. I had no work experience before, so I learned how to manage my projects on a trial-by-fire basis. Suddenly the most prominent businesses in my country were shut down due to a risk that none of them had anticipated. I quickly began work analyzing, through my research, the damage that the war had caused. I tried to apply the knowledge that I gained from my research in a way that could prevent such sudden harm from occurring in the future. My research emphasized how much it cost the businesses to be unprepared for unexpected changes and focused on preparing for disasters of all types in the future.

After reading some of the materials handed out during class, specifically those on self-preneurship, I was able to apply some of the concepts in the materials to my own experiences. For example, the handout discusses that everything happens faster these days than before. I related to that because the Iraqis were able to destroy nearly all of my country's oil fields in a few short days. Wars used to take weeks, months ...
