Overall, Italy is a favorable environment for the conduct of international business by multinational corporations. Both the political and competitive environments, however, may be considered to be volatile. Thus, multinational corporations should exercise great care in making decisions concerning entry into the Italian economy. As Italy is a member of the European Community, a more prudent decision over the coming three years might be another country within the European Community.

With a total of more than 116 thousand square miles of territory, Italy, geographically, may be divided into four parts (Hunter, 1994, p. 815). The northernmost part of the country (defined on the south by a line extending from Genoa to Venice) is a part of the main continental European land mass. This area contains Milan and Turin, the major industrial centers in Italy. Below this northern section of the country lies the Italian Peninsula, which extends almost 400 miles into the Mediterranean Sea. Both Rome and Naples are found in this area. The southernmost section of the country is the island of Sicily, which is located at the southern tip of the peninsula, while the country's fourth section, the island of Sardinia, lies west of the peninsula in the Mediterranean Sea.

The country's climate varies according to region (Hunter, 1994, p. 816). The northernmost region has a climate very much like that of central Europe. As one proceeds down the peninsula and into the islands, however, the climate becomes progressively more semi-tropical. All of the country, including the islands, is mountainous.
