Academic Success of Disadvantaged Children

t was observed that the resilient students levels of academic success were slightly above average (overall GPAs of 2.75 or greater).

However, what has not been done in the research is to examine all of the resilient characteristics in simultaneously in one comprehensive study. In other words, no research has compared resilient and non-resilient students on all of the 22 resilient characteristics observed in earlier studies at the same time. Thus, the examination of resiliency has yet to be comprehensive, covering many of the findings observed in prior research.

The research problem focused on in the proposed research involves conducting the kind of comprehensive examination of resilience that has done been accomplished heretofore. Specifically, the proposed study will examine for the separate and combined contribution of the 22 resilient characteristics observed in the existing literature to the academic success of a sample of disadvantaged middle school students. In addition, because students' academic success levels are known to often be associated with some gender differences across subject areas (Klausmeier, 1995), the proposed research will also examine whether degree of contribution to academic success significantly differs as a function of gender differences.

The proposed research has two purposes. First, it is directed toward exploring for resilience and its effects on a much larger scale than previous studies. Thus, it will provide a far more in-depth examination of the effects of resiliency in disadvantaged student groups than has been undertaken in prior research.

Second, the study examines whether any observed resiliency effects are associated with gender. This exploration provides a more precise look at any limitations of resiliency effects that might be associated with male-female differences. This is an important purpose because existing research has indicated some association between gender and resi...
