Ideas of Karl Kautsky & Benito Mussolini

The purpose of this research is to compare and contrast the ideological perspectives of Karl Kautsky and Benito Mussolini. The plan of the research will be to set forth the context in which the ideology of each figure emerged, to describe the tenets of their ideologies, and to discuss how and why they formed their political and social beliefs, with reference to specific issues, in particular their views of economics, governance, religion, and the position of the individual citizens vis-a-vis the state. The comparison between the ideologies will emerge in elaboration of Kautsky's views, followed by a comparative elaboration of Mussolini's.

Karl Kautsky (1854-1938) and Benito Mussolini (1883-1945) were at polar opposites of the ideological spectrum, with Kautsky espousing Marxist doctrine for most of his life and Mussolini espousing fascism for most of his political life. Mussolini, of course, had the higher profile on the international stage, but the culture in which his and Kautsky's ideas emerged--in the environment of both European capitalistic industrialism and modern social revolution--was almost exactly contemporary.

Kautsky's socialism was connected to his relationship with Marx and Engels, with whom he was exactly contemporary and of whom he was a principal disciple. He made his career in Austria, where he founded Die Neue Zeit, (The New Spirit), a leading socialist periodical. His radicalism positioned him as a pacifist during World War I, which he regarded as a capitalist-imperialist adventure. Kautsky fell into the margins of international socialism because nationalist interests in World War I split socialists into factions and because of the success of the Bolshevik revolution in Russia, of which he was suspicious because of his personal dislike of Lenin and because Lenin installed himself as dictator (Morgan, 1989).
