Disney-MGM Theme Park in Florida

This is an excerpt from the paper...

When the Walt Disney Company opened its DisneyMGM Studios theme park near Orlando, Florida in May 1989, it brought to four the number of theme parks the company operates in the United States. The studios were added to Disney World and Epcot Center in Florida, and Disneyland, the original theme park, in California. Disney has historically made use of technology and special effects throughout its theme parks, and the new MGM studios park is no exception. This research examines some of the technology in use at the park, and the effect that the technology is expected to have on the park's success.

The Muppets, with whom Disney entered into a co-operative agreement in the late 1980s, are featured in a 3-D movie at the park, which shows in a specially built Muppet Theater. The show, "Here Comes the Muppets," was finished just before Jim Henson died, and is intended for young children. Viewers put on 3-D glasses before entering the theater, and return the glasses upon exiting. The movie was filmed using 3-D technology, and successfully gives the illusion that objects in the movie are located not on the screen, but in space in front of the audience. Disney did not develop 3-D movie technology, but Disney theme parks are among the few venues that regularly (daily) show 3-D films. Disneyland, in California, also regularly shows a 3-D film featuring performer Michael Jackson.

In late 1989, the park introduced the Star Tours attraction, based on the George Lucas adventure fi

n beings loses control of an experiment and ends up shrinking his own children to smaller than ants. The rest of the movie is devoted to the children's' efforts to return to normal size and their adventures as miniature visitors to their own backyard. Through special effects, the children encounter a giant Twinkie mountain, a leaky water hose and a bumblebee that carries them on a wild flight. In the park, the 11,000 square foot adventure is a hands-on playground designed by Walt Disney Imagineering to reproduce the effects of the film. The Twinkie mountain is produced 16 feet tall, and the thicket is 30 feet high. A garden hose is 52 feet long, and the Cheerios cereal loops are nine feet in diameter. Sounds add to the sensation of having been shrunk: there is a buzz of a giant bee, the chirping of crickets and the sniffing of a dog's nose in the grass. The engineers have added a discarded Kodak film can that features a slide inside, and water spurting out of the hose. The water is atomized into a micro-thin sheet of liquid that is impressive, not drenching. There is also a collection of tree stumps that invite stomping by guests through producing sounds that would otherwise be found in a forest when they are stepped on.
