One of the most common signs of a person suffering from dementia is aggressive behavior. Many people diagnosed with dementia tend to have hostile and aggressive feeling due to confusion associated with the disorder. These hostile and aggressive feeling are primarily due to the lack of interest in daily life activities. According to Eimer (1989), aggressive behaviors often co-exists with intellectual decline that results from dementia. Cognitively impaired patients exhibit a greater number of behavioral problems and require more staff intervention than residents who are not impaired. (Aronson, Cox, & Guastadesigni, 1993). Patients with dementia are often confused and receive mixed messages from others around them. This confusion is also experienced during bodily signals. For example, an act of kindness by peers or health care providers may be perceived as a threat and may cause them to react in a violent. An Australian study conducted by Dodd, Hickson, and Worrall (1993) has concluded that dementia is the second most frequently identified communication impairment.

Miller (1994), attributes this type of behavior to that of invasion of personal space. When aggressive behavior is involved it may be an attempt by the elder with dementia to maintain personal control during a humiliating experience. Delusional behavior has also been known to exacerbate aggressiveness (Gibson,1997). According to Beck, Heacock, and Rossby, (1992), altered perception may cause the individual to feel threatened or fearful and behave in socially unacceptable ways.
