her. This form will include age, gender, type of lidocaine administration, timing of lidocaine administration, and heart rate and blood pressure data at pre-induction, 5 minute, 10 minute, and 15 minute intervals. Reliability and validity information are not considered.

A retrospect design will be used for this study to include the retrospective hospital chart review of subjects. Charts from local hospitals who provide services to the general public, will provide a convenience sample of 40 male and female subjects. These charts will be reviewed to obtain data regarding heart rate and blood pressure measurements in response to intravenous and topical administration of lidocaine during laryngoscopy and intubation. The study sample will include hospital charts to be selected from patients who underwent elective noncardiac surgery that required intubation, who had no history of known heart disease of hypertension, and who received either IV or topical lidocaine to blunt increases in heart rate and blood pressure. The sample will be divided into two groups, one group of 20 patients who received IV lidocaine administration, will be compared to the second group of 20 patients who received topical administration. Since the patients will not be involved, no consent forms will be needed for this study.

Approval from the internal review board (IRB) will be obtained prior to approaching the hospital for the review of charts. A letter of introduction will be sent to the IRB to obtain this approval (Appendix A).
