MORALE DETERIORATION AMONG THE CLINICAL STAFF: A CASE OF DIVIDED LOYALTIESThis research identifies a human resources morale issue in a health care corporation and proposes a plan to solve the problem. The findings of this research are presented within the contexts of (1) organization and industry identification, (2) the problem and its setting, (3) the types of employees involved, (4) the motivational issue at the heart of the problem, (5) the proposed plan for solving the problem, and (6) a justification for the proposed solution approach. The industry involved in this problem is the health care services industry and the organization is the Metropolitan Medical Center, which operates a central hospital facility of provides 950 beds, along with satellite facilities located in the area which provide specialty health care services. Approximately 4,000 persons are employed directly by the organization. These employees include heath care professionals, administrators, other health care workers, and clerical and service employees. Additionally, approximately 800 physicians and dentists are accredited to the medical center, and approximately 2,400 volunteers provide additional services. On the average, approximately 30,000 persons are served each year as inpatients, while approximately 105,000 persons are served as outpatients each year. This situation is especially critical in the Clinical Rehabilitation Department, where staff-developed patient treatment plans are undermined by scheduling conflicts with the planned and required activities of other departments (Medical, Mental Health, and Educational) within the Oak Bay Residential Treatment Facility.
Types of Employees
There are several types of employees assigned to the Clinical Rehabilitation Department of the Oak Bay Residential Treatment Facility. These employee types are professional, technical, and clerical. The employee group most acutely affected by the morale problem addressed in this research, however, is the professional staff of the Clinical Rehabilitation Department.
Both men and women are found among each of the three employee types in the Clinical Rehabilitation Department. Gender, however, is not a relevant issue in the morale problem addressed in this research.
