In recent years, the type of damage which has been sustained by companies includes bombings (the World Trade Center and the federal building in Oklahoma City), hurricanes, earthquakes, power outages and floods. While these events are apparently dissimilar when first considered, the effects caused by each to the data centers involved are remarkably similar.

Companies and organizations which endure these types of disasters are likely to lose the ability to continue computer operations from their traditional site. This renders on-site backups nearly useless (if the computer system is destroyed, it is likely that on-site backups stored in the data center would also be destroyed). This emphasizes the need for an off-site backup location.
