Anger Control & Management in a Classroom

solving conflicts in a peaceful fashion.

The teaching strategies that have been developed for this instructional unit are derived from the humanistic theory and principles. The humanistic approach places tremendous emphasis on the self-worth and the responsibility of the human being. According to humanists, individuals possess the ability to overcome their weaknesses and difficulties in life through critical reflection and support in a positive environment. Therefore, all human beings will be able to pursue their fundamental goals of self-knowledge and understanding in the ideal learning environment (Rogers, 1961; Maslow, 1987).

Within the classroom setting, the humanistic approach can be translated into the overall attitude of the facilitator who clearly demonstrates concern and respect for learners as unique individuals. Adopting an empathetic attitude towards learners, effective facilitators can thus understand the frustrations and imperfections of their learners, even as they seek to overcome the latter's difficulties with their learning process (Rogers, 1983).

In accordance with these humanistic principles, the delivery of this instructional unit will involve the active participation of the learners through critical reflection, role playing and cooperative discussions. Students will be challenged to use their cognitive processes to make associations between their emotion of anger and their behavior. Furthermore, they will have the opportunity to learn how they can apply cognitive skills to manage their anger effectively ("CBI Fact Sheet," 2000; Tyler, 1949).
