General Fiber Optics Section 1 INTRODUCTION Communications

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Communications transmission technology is developing rapidly in the last years of the twentieth century. One of the newest and most promising technological innovations to gain wide acceptance in user applications is fiber optics. The user application of fiber optics technology has created a support market involving the manufacture and marketing of test and monitoring equipment. As is true of most hightech innovations in recent years, the fiber optics support market for test and marketing equipment is developing an international competitive character. It is important for the American economy that American firms be able to compete effectively in the fiber optics support market for test and monitoring equipment, so that the country wil not become an also ran in one more hightech activity. The proposed research study will develop a strategy which will permit a small, American fiber optics test and monitoring equipment manufacturer to compete effectively in the American market against foreign competition.

General Fiber Optics, Inc. is a small American (New Jersey) manufacturer of fiber optics test and monitoring

equipment. In 1990, the domestic fiber optics test and monitoring equipment market will have total sales approximating $225 million, with growth of 10 percent per annum projected for the early1990s. In mid1990, approximately 50 American firms are manufacturing and marketing fiber optics test an

er, there is no point in either considering or selecting a technology which will do an acceptable today, if, in a shorttime, new demands will cause it to become outmoded. Thus, the future data requirements of the organization must also be considered at this point in the decisionmaking process. The fact that a consideration of the future data trans mission requirements of an organization must be performed at more than one point in the decisionmaking process under scores another fact. The decision steps involved in the acquisition and implementation of any data transmission sys tem are not independent. They are, in fact, highly interde pendent. Thus, although the decisionmaking process is, in this report, discussed in a stepwise manner, the decision making process, in fact, must be a fully integrated and interdependent activity. 12 The second major decision area which must be addressed by the manager involves physical and technological constraints. If, as an example, data must be transmitted over long distances, coaxial cable will not be able to be used. Such situations may occur because terminals to be linked are in separate areas of a city or simply because efficient facilities allocation dictate the separa
