Research Studies Directly Related to the Study Purpose
Texas law does not specify the length of time that patient medical records must be maintained by health care providers. Various federal and state regulations applicable to specific types of health care records, however, include retention times up to and including five years. Further, for judicial purposes, some types of health care records may be requested as long as ten years from the date of the latest entry on such records. For this reason, legal counsel for Emergency Medical Clinics, Incorporated recommended that the organization maintain all patient records for a period of ten years following the latest entry on such records.
