POLITICAL, AND ECONOMIC DESCRIPTION

Argentina occupies most of the southern wedge of the South American continent. Chile occupies a portion of the wedge to the west of the Andes Mountains. Argentina's contiguous neighbors are Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The country's topography ranges from high mountains to heavily wooded plains to fertile and virtually treeless Pampas to an arid plain in the far south. Argentina is the second largest country (in terms of both geography and population) in South America. The country's geographic area is twice that of the largest (geographically) American stateAlaska, while its population is 25 percent greater than that of the largest (population) American stateCalifornia (Paxton, 1990).

Several military coup d'etats occurred between 1955 and 1973. During that 18 year time period, the country had nine

The one lasting and recognized positive factor related to the presidencies of both Juan and Isabel Peron was labor reform. Another lasting factor which not everyone recognizes as positive is the Peronista Party, of which the current President of Argentina, Carlos Menem, is a member.

From 1976 through 1983, the country was ruled by a series of militaryled governments. The downfall of the string of military governments resulted from the disastrous (for Argentina) outcome of the Falklands (Malvinas) War in 1982.
