Both Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa are associated with "subclinical" types. The subclinical type consists of people whose eating behavior patterns and weight do not evidence disturbance but whose cognitions do evidence the disturbed thinking patterns associated with eating disorder (Bunnell, Shenker, Nussbaum & Jacobson, 1990).

Some researchers (e.g. Williamson, Prather, McKenzie & Blouin, 1990; Wardle, 1987) also classify over-eating resulting in obesity as a type of eating disorder. According to Mount, Neziroglu and Taylor (1990), this type of eating disorder is thought to be associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder with the obsession being focused upon food and eating.

Behavioral and Cognitive Features of Eating Disorders

People with eating disorder can differ in terms of their manifest behavioral symptomology and in terms of the kind of treatment they need to remediate the problem (Mount, Neziroglu & Taylor, 1990); however, despite variance in type of eating disorder, people with an eating disorder will often evidence dietary restraint.
