Business Mathematics

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Nelda W. Roueche in her book Business Mathematics: A Collegiate Approach offers an overview of the subject of business mathematics in all its ramifciations. She does not address any one issue in depth but does give a good idea of the nature of the subject matter, the types of problems that differnet types of mathematics address, and some of the ways in whcih problems are solved in this way. She looks first to the basics, meaning arithemtic operations, the use of a calculator, basic equations, and a review of the subject of percent. She then turns to accounting mathematics and shows how this issue is handled in business, the issue of retail mathematics, the mathematics of finance, and in each case she gives an overview of the subject matter, the types of mathematical operations involved, and the nature of the problem for students.

She begins by noting that business mathematics is a comprehensive course that exposes the student to a wide range of mathematical procedures which they may encounter later in business. She sees her own book as being timely, thorough, and effective. The book is designed to present the material with certain specific aspects of the subject covered well for students, notably the terminology and business applications of each topic; the use of a large number of examples to make the material clear to the student and to show how the subject is applied in practice; a large number of problems included for the student to solve; student learning objectives

The author wants the student to end this section by knowing how to compute a payroll, how to make out the various forms that are necessary, and how to report the payrolls for Social Security and tax purposes both for the benefit of the employer and the employee. Chapter 9 addresses the issue of depreciation and overhead, the expenses that a business must pay in order to stay in business. Depreciation is calculated through specific formulas that determine how quickly the value of an item decreases, and the means to make these calculations are explained with profuse examples to help the student learn to make these calculations him or herself. Depreciation is the loss in value in fixed assets, and the terminology, as always in this book, is clearly explained. Overhead is another expense that is ongoing and that involves the amount of money a business must spend each month in rent, purchase o
