Business Mathematics

f basic operations that the student should have learned in elementary mathematics courses, but the review of them here is cogent, to the point, and detailed enough to include all of the basic operations. This section can serve as a reference point for the rest of the book, enabling the student who may be confused about a basic operation to check back and resolve the issue. The arithmetic techniques are covered--addition, multiplication, subtraction, and division--as well as particular means of notation such as the use of parentheticals to divide an equation and to determine the order of operation, the rounding off of decimals to make it possible to get an answer correct to the proper number of decimal points, and issues of problem solving. This section in particular is important, for not every student understand how to translate a problem into a mathematical equation which can then be solved in the traditional manner.

Chapter 2 considers the using of equations, another issue which may confuse some students in spite of an elementary mathematics background. Basic equations are described and problems are presented to illustrate the text. Written problems are given a special section to show how to translate a problem into mathematical language. Methods of ascertaining ratio and proportion are considered, and these are very important in business mathematics. Chapter 3 reviews percent, another issue of great importance in business, and this chapter includes showing how to ascertain a percentage from a fraction and a fraction from a percentage. The author wants to show the student a number of percentage operations, including how to use an equation to find the original number when the percent of change is known.

The first large section after the basics addresses issues of Accounting Mathematics, referring to mathematical operations that would be used in a business by an accountant and for keeping a running record of business mat...
