If the family role division is rather traditional, the father working and the mother staying home with the child, the mother will be hungry for adult companionship, stimulation, and support when the father comes home after work. This need on her part may coincide with the father feeling tired and uncertain about the new family responsibilities. Both parents need to understand that, at times, outside support may be necessary to prevent the family from feeling isolated and crushed from new roles and tasks. In past generations such support took the form of extended families and neighbors helping with information and practical division of child-rearing tasks. In present more impersonal times, such support may need to be formally sought out in the form of classes, groups, or phone networks of individuals with similar needs.
