Beginning the 1990s, in 1991 the CDC developed a national strategic plan for early detection and control of breast and cervical cancer for all American women, and began the first large-scale health survey by computer (CDC, 2002). In 1992 the CDC added the word Prevention to its name, and in 1993 launched the National Childhood Immunization campaign. In the same year it was responsible for discovering, and naming, hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in the Four Corners area of the U.S. 1996 saw the 50th anniversary of the nationÆs Prevention Agency. In 1999 the CDC named a building and a campus after Congressman Edward R. Roybal, who secured more than $100 million for CDC buildings during his career.

The CDCÆs present mission is to ôpromote health and quality of life by preventing and controlling disease, injury, and disabilityö (CDC, 2004). The CDC accomplishes its mission by working with partners throughout the U.S. and the world to ômonitor health problems, conduct research to enhance prevention, develop and advocate sound public health policies, implement prevention strategies, promote healthy behaviors, foster safe and healthful environments, and provide leadership and training.ö The CDC plays a critical role in protecting against infectious diseases, traveling with a moments notice to investigate outbreaks anywhere in the world. It works with public health and grassroots partners, and uses the internet and communication media to provide health and safety information to the public. The CDC works with national, state, and local organizations to help protect communities from exposure to environmental hazards. As the lead federal agency for protecting public health, it also compiles statistical information to guide actions and policies to improve the health of the nation (CDC, 2003).
