Consequently, it is predictable that written language is generally stylistically more formal than spoken language.

Ellis (1992) has pointed out that when written communication is examined by linguists, what tends to emerge is the recognition of a greater emphasis on coherence in discourse itself. Writing enables the communicator to select a form of topicality or topic content as it is expressed in propositions, schemes, lexical items, issues and events, and so forth.
