Remer and Ross (1982) view one of the most important of the school counselor's functions as that of creating a school environment that fosters androgyny. In a review of the literature on sexist practices in education, the authors note that women form the base of the educational pyramid while men direct the operation from their positions atop the structure.

It is suggested that because androgynous individuals possess, and are free to choose from, a wider repertoire of behaviors from those traditionally appropriate for both men and women, they are able to respond more effectively and creatively to a variety of life situations. In creating a school environment that fosters androgyny, the counselor acts as the main initiator and consultant.
