Research methods include historical (past events), descriptive (data collected to answer questions), correlational (degree of relationships between data), comparative (direct variable relationships, without variable manipulation), and experimental (independent variable manipulated to show dependent variable effects) research.

Techniques used by researchers in educational psychology include surveys, interviews, observation, cross-sectional and longitudinal research, cross-cultural research, and single-case research. Primary, secondary, and meta-analysis are used to analyze the data collected. The first analysis of the data is primary analysis, usually done by the researcher who designed and conducted the research. Once findings are announced and published, other researchers may reanalyze the data with better statistical procedures, to further clarify the original data analysis (secondary analysis). Meta-analysis is the analysis of analyses; it is the statistical analysis of a large collection of results from several studies.

"Diversity in the classroom: Culture, class, and gender." Cultural differences implies the transmission of ideas. Culture is considered a positive influence which enhances cognitive development with the imposing of symbolic systems (language) on the child's developing mind. The interaction of different cultures provides a unique opportunity to further understanding. Cultural compatibility includes variables such as social organization, sociolinguistics, cognition, and motivation. Self-esteem is imperative for the child in the classroom; helping children accept other's differences is a social goal of multicultural education.
