Black Faculty Members at Colleges According to Laury (1988), a large

n college/university programs that have been designed and successfully implemented as solutions. In this regard, it can be noted that several colleges and universities have developed excellent programs for correcting the problem of under-representation of minorities on their faculties.

Examination of these programs offers insight into strategies that can be used for the remediation of the problem; accordingly, several of these programs are here reviewed. One such program is the faculty development program implemented by The University of Texas at Austin.

Discussed by Rodriguez (1993), this program has established a highly successful graduate training program for recruiting community college administrators. The program is known for its high rates of participation by minorities and women.

According to Rodriguez, program success can be attributed to a "battery" approach to the problem, this being an approach that employs several diverse methods simultaneously. These methods include: aggressive fund raising, outreach, recruitment, and leadership education training.

To increase the diversity and retention levels of under-represented Black and Hispanic faculty and staff, Cerritos College implemented the Partnering for Diversity program. According to Lynn (1994), this program had multiple goals. Specifically, the program sought to: increase participation of under-represented employees in positions of leadership; increase the diverse applicant pool for tenure track position by mentoring under-represented graduate students; develop campus policies and procedures based on outcomes achieved; evaluate program activities for effectiveness; and disseminate the results of the project.
