This group belongs to the groups which are against any development. They are NOPE's--Not- On-Planet-Earth (Reilly, 1995, p. 262); they want all pollution, waste disposal and new development banned. This group actively promotes civil disobedience and minor terrorist acts--spiking trees to cause loggers chain saws to break or kick back upon the loggers, climbing trees scheduled for cutting and protest marches to influence public policy.

The more reasonable of the environmentalists advocate a policy, of controlled economic development, to stimulate development of the economy. Their reasoning is that, as per capita income increases, people tend to demand that their standard of living increase. This desire for an increased standard of living translates into a greater concern for the environment.
