After negotiating the release of Lt. Robert O. Goodman from Syrian custody Jan. 4, 1984, Jackson was rewarded with respect by Americans for his successful completion of a most "humanitarian gesture." At that time, he dominated the Democratic party, and, as one Mondale consultant said, he was "the most formidable Black leader in America." Jackson was pleased with the praise and said that he would continue to stress world peace if elected president. When asked about Central America, he coolly responded that he would immediately stop all military aid to our southern neighbors.
