In 1765, Alexander Henry, a trader with the Indians, traveled through the Lake Superior region and made note of the abundance of copper used by the local Indians. They had fashioned the copper into spoons and bracelets for their own usage.

It is doubtful that native Americans did any sort of copper mining before the arrival of the Europeans. We do, however, have evidence that they did detach pieces of metal from the large native masses that were abundant around Lake Superior in the seventeenth century.
